How to choose a mattress, sofa, office chair or bedding

Home goods bought online are big, heavy and personal. A sofa that looks right on screen can feel wrong in the room, and a mattress takes weeks to judge. So the return terms matter as much as the price. This guide covers what to check, and the store policies table at the end compares return windows and fees across the brands.
Mattresses: read the trial, not just the price
Many mattress brands offer a long sleep trial, but the details differ: some require you to sleep on it for a minimum period first, some charge for pickup or deduct shipping, and some only offer an exchange. Casper, Avocado and Tuft & Needle each publish their terms; check them before you pick a firmness. All mattresses sold in the US must meet a federal flammability standard, so "fire safe" is not a premium feature. For foam, the CertiPUR-US mark means the foam was tested for certain chemicals and emissions; for organic claims on cotton or latex, look for a named certification such as GOTS rather than the word "organic" alone.
Sofas and furniture
- Measure the route, not just the room. Doors, stairs and elevators decide what fits. Modular sofas from Burrow, Albany Park and Floyd arrive in boxes, which helps in tight spaces.
- Return costs. Furniture returns often carry a restocking fee or a percentage of the price, and some brands also keep the original shipping cost. The table below shows what each brand charges.
- Fabric. Ask for swatches before ordering a large piece: color on screen is unreliable, and performance fabrics differ in how they handle pets and spills.
- Tip-overs. Dressers and other clothing storage units sold in the US must meet a federal stability standard, and CPSC still recommends anchoring furniture to the wall, especially in homes with children.
Office chairs and standing desks
OSHA's workstation guidance lists what an adjustable chair needs: adjustable seat height, lumbar support you can move, a seat that lets your feet rest flat, armrests that keep your shoulders relaxed and a stable five-leg base. Use it as a checklist when comparing chairs from Branch, HBADA or Secretlab. Check the weight rating and the seat height range against your own height, and whether a trial lets you return a chair that has been assembled.
Sheets, towels and weighted blankets
For bedding from Brooklinen, Parachute, Boll & Branch or Buffy, the weave matters more than thread count: percale feels crisp and cool, sateen smoother and warmer, linen textured and breathable. OEKO-TEX labels mean the finished textile was tested for harmful substances. For weighted blankets from Bearaby or Gravity, a common starting point is around a tenth of body weight; they are not for infants or young children.
Cookware and air purifiers
For cookware from HexClad, Our Place or Misen, check whether pans are oven-safe and to what temperature, whether they work on induction and what the warranty covers when a nonstick surface wears. For air purifiers from Coway or Molekule, compare the clean air delivery rate (CADR) against your room size; AHAM Verifide certifies CADR claims, and the EPA's guide to air cleaners explains what they can and can't remove. Budget for replacement filters, which can cost more over a few years than the purifier itself.
How to save in this category
Home brands rarely run deep sitewide codes, but bundles (a mattress with pillows, a sofa with an ottoman) and free extras such as white-glove delivery are common. Compare the full delivered price, including any assembly or delivery fee, and check the return window and fee before choosing between two similar items.
