How to choose an e-bike, dash cam or car accessory

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How we make money.

Most of the money in this category goes on two kinds of purchase: something that has to fit one exact car, and something with a large lithium-ion battery. Both are expensive to get wrong, and both are hard to return. This guide covers what to check before you pay, and the store policies table at the end shows how returns work at each brand.

E-bikes: check the class before the motor

In most US states an e-bike is legally a bicycle only if it fits one of three classes. Class 1 helps while you pedal up to 20 mph, Class 2 adds a throttle up to 20 mph, and Class 3 helps while you pedal up to 28 mph. States decide where each class may ride, and some limit Class 3 bikes on bike paths or set a minimum rider age. PeopleForBikes keeps a state-by-state summary of e-bike laws, and it is worth reading before you choose a bike with an "unlocked" or off-road mode.

Then compare what actually changes your ride:

Battery safety is not optional

Many e-bike battery fires start while the battery is charging. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has urged makers to certify e-bikes to UL 2849 and other e-mobility devices to UL 2272, the safety standards for the whole electrical system. Before you buy:

Electric motorbikes and dirt bikes

Bikes such as 79BIKE, SUPER73 or the faster Riding'times models can go well beyond e-bike speeds. Many are sold for off-road use only. Read the product page for the class or "off-road" label, check whether your state requires registration, insurance or a motorcycle license for that speed, and budget for a helmet rated for motorcycle speeds rather than a bicycle helmet.

Dash cams, floor mats and exact-fit accessories

Brands like Fitcamx, TuxMat, Car Mats Customs, Jowua and Yeslak make parts for specific makes, models and years. Enter your exact trim before you order, because many brands treat custom-fit items as harder or costlier to return. For dash cams, compare:

Detailing products and jump starters

For detailing kits from Chemical Guys, Adam's Polishes or Obsessed Garage, compare price per ounce rather than kit price, and check whether coatings need a specific prep product you would have to buy too. Portable jump starters from GOOLOO and tire inflators from Fanttik carry lithium-ion batteries: the FAA's rules on lithium batteries apply if you plan to fly with one.

How to save in this category

Big-ticket mobility brands discount by model rather than with sitewide codes, so compare the bike or kit you want across the brand's own current offers on its GoSavify page. Ask whether accessories such as racks, fenders or a second battery are cheaper as a bundle at checkout than added later, and check whether the price includes shipping: freight charges on bikes and rooftop tents can add a lot to the total.

Read from each brand's own refund and shipping policy. A dash means we couldn't confirm it there. Terms change, so the policy at checkout is the one that counts.
