How to choose coffee, food subscriptions and pantry brands

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How we make money.

Food and drink brands sell mostly by subscription, and the subscription price is usually the cheapest way to buy. The catch is in the terms: how often it ships, how easy it is to skip or cancel, and what happens when a box arrives damaged or warm. This guide covers what to check, and the store policies table at the end shows each brand's return and refund terms.

Coffee: freshness and caffeine

Subscriptions such as Trade and Atlas Coffee Club pick beans for you; check whether you can choose roast level and grind, and how many days before shipping you can skip.

Meat and meal delivery

For ButcherBox, Snake River Farms and Daily Harvest, check how the box is kept cold, what the brand does if it arrives thawed, and whether someone needs to be home. USDA grades such as Prime, Choice and Select describe beef quality; the USDA explains each grade. "Wagyu" on a US label can mean a cross-bred animal, so read the brand's own description of the breed.

Olive oil, spices and pantry staples

For olive oil from Graza or Brightland, look for a harvest date and a dark bottle or tin; oil loses flavor with light, heat and time. Single-origin spices from Burlap & Barrel or Diaspora Co. are often fresher than supermarket jars, so a smaller jar may go further. Date labels on most foods describe quality, not safety: the USDA's food product dating guide explains what "Best if Used By" means. For organic claims, look for the USDA Organic seal.

Snacks, cereal and drinks

For protein cereal and snacks such as Magic Spoon or Catalina Crunch, compare price per serving and grams of protein per serving, not per box. For non-alcoholic beer and apéritifs from Athletic Brewing or Ghia, and prebiotic soda from OLIPOP, check whether the store ships to your state and what the minimum order is for free shipping.

Subscriptions: check how to cancel before you join

Before you start any food or coffee subscription, find out how to skip a delivery, change frequency and cancel, and whether a first-box discount is followed by a higher regular price. Many states have automatic-renewal laws that require clear terms and an easy way to cancel. Note the date your next box is charged so a forgotten renewal doesn't cost you a full box.

How to save in this category

Subscribe-and-save pricing is the most reliable discount here, followed by first-order offers for signing up to a brand's emails. Free-shipping thresholds vary a lot between brands; the table below shows them where the brand publishes one, so you can size your order to clear it.

Read from each brand's own refund and shipping policy. A dash means we couldn't confirm it there. Terms change, so the policy at checkout is the one that counts.
